Abstract: The article describes the history of Pavel Annenkov’s memoir publications about Ivan Turgenev in the magazine “Vestnik Evropy” (Herald of Europe) and analyses the development of the memoir genre and the choice of the material. The article describes the draft of Ivan Turgenev’s portrait in “The Extraordinary Decade” and the notes about Ivan Turgenev in the rough materials of the 1870s “Two Winters in the Province and in the Countryside from January 1849 to August 1851”. Special attention is paid to the memoir written after the death of the writer – “The Youth of I.S. Turgenev. 1840–1856” and “Six Years of the Correspondence with I.S. Turgenev. 1856–1862”, “From the Correspondence with I.S. Turgenev in the 1860s” – and published in the magazine “Vestnik Evropy”. The article tells about the role of the letters in the memoir structure and emphasises the main demand for the biographer to see the complete nature of the personage and to believe him. The article describes the principles of composition of the memoir and explains Pavel Annenkov’s interpretation of the periods of Ivan Turgenev’s creative work. The letters to Ivan Turgenev and Mikhail Stasyulevich (the editor and the publisher of the magazine “Vestnik Evropy”) define more precisely the basic principles of Pavel Annenkov’s memoir method.
