Abstract: The review is a response to the multivolume work of Igor’ Vinogradov, “The Chronicle of Nikolai Gogol’s Life and Work” (in 7 volumes; Moscow, A. M. Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences Publ., 2017–2018) and it contains a brief description of this publication. The reviewer notes the most valuable (from her point of view) findings of the Chronicle’s compiler regarding organisation of the material. This is the transmission of one event by different “voices” due to the use of a vast database of sources; the compiler's topical and interpretative comments on the events, realities or estimates; a detailed geographical outline of Nikolai Gogol's movements; the introduction of the Christian calendar, i.e. the mention of church holidays next to the dates. This is important because the Church calendar conveys Nikolai Gogol's perception of the annual cycle. This is reflected in his works. The chronicle is the most possible chronological record of the events of Nikolai Gogol's biographical and spiritual life. “The Chronicle” also reflects the vicissitudes of world history, which the writer somehow came into contact with, and the literary life in which he was immersed.
