Abstract:

The work of Kokhanovskaya (N. S. Sokhanskaya) contains rich material that significantly complements the idea of how the theme of family is revealed in Russian literature. The article examines her stories from the 1840s to the 1860s in connection with this particular topic. Kokhanovskaya depicted many ideal families in her works, but the author of the article focuses on how these stories show the diversity of family conflicts: sometimes in a tragic, sometimes in a comic way, sometimes melodramatically or in the tradition of realism. The variety of plot collisions and genres does not interfere with maintaining fidelity to the Christian worldview. Her heroes overcome all conflict situations with patience, the memory of God, and the ability to take a step towards another person. This serves as the best confirmation of the concept that Kokhanovskaya belongs to a rare “positive direction” in Russian literature.

Keywords: Kokhanovskaya, N. S. Sokhanskaya, Russian literature, stories, family theme, typology of plots, “positive literary school.”
